About Helen Whyte

Helen Whyte is a Canadian artist whose resplendent works are a testament to her love of nature’s bounty and the intricacies of portraying people and their most precious moments.

Her works have been featured in a number of art shows including the Calyx Art Show in Calgary in 2005 and 2006. Her paintings are also in private collections across Western Canada.

Her early work was mostly in watercolour and recently she has been branching into the acrylic and oil mediums with vibrant results. Her recent paintings are incredibly expressive and embody many of the passions that inspire Helen’s work: “I love the simplicity of prairie scenery--the sweep of the clouds, the stark vastness of the land. I also love portraiture because I want to help people understand how amazing they are and hopefully, my paintings allow them to see themselves as I see them – works of art.” Helen also thrives on the challenge of portraying water, and its relationship to the land.

Many people have influenced her love of art, beginning with her mother, who encouraged her to work in watercolour, and provided art books and informal education in art history to her and her four sisters, along with an appreciation of landscape and people in the central  Alberta farming community where they lived.

Helen’s talent has thrived with the loving encouragement she receives from her husband Ian, her two children, many friends, her sisters and large extended family. She has also had some wonderful guidance and inspiration from art teachers, most especially Tessa Nunn and Jackie Ramsay. Helen has lived most of her adult life in Calgary with her husband and two children.
